Confused …

I often find that I am confused. This has shown more recently than I care to admit. I love history. I find that there are those who say that things didn’t happen that did. As a military veteran I find that I am so frustrated at the way that kids behave it isn’t funny. I am so tired of the fact that things that we (people in their 40’s) went through is now considered abuse. I will explain.

When I was growing up, we had something called chores.  This sounds strange to the kids today. I remember having to clear the table, do dishes by hand, and wash the entire family laundry. This was the way things were. My parents worked and that was what I was told that I had to do. There was no negotiation on it. I did the job that I had and that was it. As I got older there were things that were age correct were added.

There were times that I got in trouble as any kid did. The fact is that there were times that I tasted my dad’s belt due to the fact that it was felt I had not learned the lesson that they were trying to teach me. I learned that I had to work in order to get the new Levis that I wanted.

We didn’t have cell phones, if we were going to be late, we had to find a pay phone and call home. If we had a homework assignment we had to go to the library to get the access to the Encyclopedias that had the information. We had to read through more and more information then had to write the information out on paper with a ball point pen.

Today: kids have computers, (some don’t even know how to write). They want to find something out … they Google it. They have cell phones with mini computers in them. If you try to tell them no they say you are being abusive to them and threaten to call the state on you. You spank them and you are ‘assaulting’ the child. Now it has almost become a crime to say no to them.

We grew up in a way that world where we had to learn the hard way and  now kids are (In my opinion) spoiled and don’t understand life.

The VA

The VA Medical Centers are supposed to help those who have been willing to serve this country. The fact is that there are those who feel Veterans don’t ‘deserve’ the services that we get there. So I thought it was time to really take a look at what the VA does for the Veterans of all the Military Branches.

First off and most important: Thank you to the ones that have served and those who do serve in the Armed forces.

The Veterans Affairs program was set up in 1930. This was during the presidency of President Hoover. It was to help those that had served honorably get help that they needed.

The VA medical centers have had several … shall we say ‘technical challenges’ over the years.  For a while they were not getting funding to the right areas and that caused people to have health problems. There have been more Veterans than there are those who can help them.

At the same time the VA Medical Centers have made leaps in ways that everyone can be thankful for. The VA was the group that came up with Electronic Medical Records. They are the people that have worked with colleges to realize that there are things out there that people don’t see and can’t understand. They work as a team. I know due to the fact that when I have a question about a medication it has to be cleared by several people before it is given to me. These are different doctors that are working with me then the pharmacist has to make sure there are no interactions with the things that I take, then they have the allergy list to go over and if everything works out then they will send it to me.

I still hear the people who say that we don’t need to spend the money on Veterans and I will admit I get frustrated. These are the people who are willing to give everything including their lives for this country. Take the time to say thank you instead.

The Mummy Series…. an inside view

“Are you sure you want to be playing around with this thing?”

“It’s just a book. No harm ever came from reading a book.”  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120616/quotes ) What is the problem with Evelyn’s thinking? In the movie we see a lot of problems. I am one of the people that can find some of the strangest things in movies that others don’t seem to see.

The interesting thing is that books are rapidly going out of style. I have seen people who will read them only in a digital format. While this might be lighter to carry around I see several issues with it, what happens when things get to where they are ban and a person has only a digital copy of something, will they still have access to it… no.  They loose it. I have had it happen to me before.

“Know this: this creature is the bringer of death. He will never eat, he will never sleep, and he will never stop.”  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120616/quotes ) Doesn’t Ardeth’s thinking describe the way that humans behave? We seem to destroy everything in our way. Whether it is forest, animals we seem to spread and destroy what is in our way and go on until there is nothing left.

A Tale of Danger

16078026

Here is a tale of danger: your information online isn’t safe …

My tale begins a few months ago. I was trying to get some additional funds for my family after the loss of some funds. I had tried ‘GoFundMe’ never went anywhere so I had tried to get a grant for medical expenses but had never applied to any. I got distracted with work and forgot about it.

Fast forward to yesterday: I was at the doctors and got a call on my cell phone with a person saying they were going to ‘give’ me a grant for nine thousand dollars. They had information that was basic and they said they were going to ‘Western Union‘ the money to me. They wanted to do a transfer to my bank acct – NOT!.They said they were going to call back in about an hour and a half and never did.

I tried to call them back and the number didn’t work 1st warning bell! The second one was the fact that they used key words ‘FREE, USAA, MONEY THAT I WOULDN’T HAVE TO PAY BACK’ second warning bell!! Both I heard and listen to. When I tried to call them back and the number didn’t work, I got worried. I called ‘Western Union‘ and they said there was no funds waiting for me -I expected the answer. I called USAA (very good company and very safe) and told them what happened and that they had used the company name – 30 minutes later I had done a fraud report and been able to verify that I am who I say I am.

This morning I was going through my old emails and found one that I had forgotten about and that was a federal site that would help with getting grants, so I called them – the young lady was very friendly. I explained what had happened and she said that it was a scam and that I had done the right thing by not giving any information. She explained that the information that the person said they had could be gotten anywhere.

So what is this tale trying to warn you of

1:IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE — IT PROBABLY IS

2: IF YOU ARE TRYING TO GET A GRANT — THE COMPANY WILL HAVE CERTAIN INFORMATION IN IT SUCH AS A START AND STOP DATE

3: CHECK YOUR CREDIT INFORMATION — YOU CAN SEE AND DISPUTE PROBLEMS

4: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING — IT CAN PROTECT YOU AND SAVE YOU A HEADACHE LATER.

The Equation

What is the biggest thing that can throw any equation into chaos? Choice. The reason I say this is best described in the movies in the series ‘The Matrix’. The movie is about choices, the choices that humans make everyday. The people who wrote the movie weren’t trying to make a history lesson but they can teach us a lot.

If you think about it, there is more than once they talk about the choices that are made. Neo has to make several that are very hard and one that stands out to me is when he is standing with The Architect and listens to how coldly he talks about the fact that the Matrix has been done six times. He says that Neo is the sum of an equation that is trying to balance itself.

So if one person is trying to make the right choice and their life is part of an equation then how can we resolve the equation without destroying the lives that we have.

The fact is that by reading this, you made a choice. Going left instead of right, you made a choice. Do you have a hamburger or a salad … again the problem is choice.

So I wonder if you could make a choice to help one person, then will you or won’t you? The choice is yours … the blue pill and go back to sleep or the red pill and see how far the rabbit hole goes? What is your choice?

Morpheus: What is real? How do you define ‘real’? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. ”

” I know you’re out there. I can feel you now. I know that you’re afraid… you’re afraid of us. You’re afraid of change. I don’t know the future. I didn’t come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it’s going to begin. I’m going to hang up this phone, and then I’m going to show these people what you don’t want them to see. I’m going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you.”  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/quotes)

Agent Smith: But, as you well know, appearances can be deceiving, which brings me back to the reason why we’re here. We’re not here because we’re free. We’re here because we’re not free. There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist.

[Several Agent Smith Clones walk in]

Agent Smith Clone 1: It is purpose that created us.

Agent Smith Clone 2: Purpose that connects us.

Agent Smith Clone 3: Purpose that pulls us.

Agent Smith Clone 4: That guides us.

Agent Smith Clone 5: That drives us.

Agent Smith Clone 6: It is purpose that defines us.

Agent Smith Clone 7: Purpose that binds us.

Agent Smith: We are here because of you, Mr Anderson. We’re here to take from you what you tried to take from us.

[Attempts to copy himself into Neo]

Agent Smith: Purpose.”

The Architect: As I was saying, she stumbled upon a solution whereby nearly ninety-nine percent of the test subjects accepted the program provided they were given a choice – even if they were only aware of it at a near-unconscious level. While this solution worked, it was fundamentally flawed, creating the otherwise contradictory systemic anomaly, that, if left unchecked, might threaten the system itself. Ergo, those who refused the program, while a minority, would constitute an escalating probability of disaster.

Neo: This is about Zion.

The Architect: There are two doors. The door to your right leads to the Source and the salvation of Zion. The door to your left leads back to the Matrix, to her… and to the end of your species. As you adequately put, the problem is choice. But we already know what you are going to do, don’t we? Already I can see the chain reaction: the chemical precursors that signal the onset of an emotion, designed specifically to overwhelm logic and reason. An emotion that is already blinding you to the simple and obvious truth: she is going to die and there is nothing you can do to stop it. ” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0234215/quotes )

Agent Smith: Why, Mr. Anderson? Why, why? Why do you do it? Why, why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you’re fighting… for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. Temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although… only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can’t win. It’s pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?

Neo: Because I choose to.

Neo: I only ask to say what I’ve come here to say. After that, do what you want and I won’t try to stop you.

[the drones withdraw and resolve into a face]

Deus Ex Machina: Speak.

Neo: The program Smith has grown beyond your control. Soon he will spread through this city, as he spread through the matrix. You cannot stop him. But I can.

Deus Ex Machina: [shouting] WE DON’T NEED YOU! WE NEED NOTHING!

[the drones swarm around Neo again]

Neo: If that’s true, then I’ve made a mistake, and you should kill me now.

[the drones swarm… and draw back into the face again]

Deus Ex Machina: What do you want?

Neo: Peace.

The Oracle: Everything that has a beginning has an end. I see the end coming, I see the darkness spreading. I see death. ”

The Program…

What if you knew that the government was doing something that it shouldn’t, what would you do? Would you keep the information to yourself? Would you tell someone? Who could you trust? When it is the government, could you honestly trust someone?

I don’t know if I could trust someone with the information unless the person could be trusted 100%. But who can you trust that much? We all are people: flesh, blood, air, emotions so who could we trust that much? There are several things that come to mind when I mention this.

The first is a day that we just were asked to remember and that is December 7th 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. There were things were warnings, the radar operator that saw the planes but was told that it was just routine traffic from California.  (http://hawaii.gov/hawaiiaviation/world-war-ii/december-7-1941 )

So if the government makes this mistake and thinks that these planes are a routine flight then how do you explain that the service personnel of the USS Indianapolis were left in the water for 5 days? The Americans had cracked the Japanese code, they knew the people were there and still they didn’t respond. (http://www.ussindianapolis.org/ ). Most people don’t even know about her. How did we find out … a movie ‘Jaws’. If you remember the movie, you will remember there was a scene where they are talking about the scars that they had and it is mentioned as the reason that Quinn wouldn’t put a life jacket on. “Hooper: You were on the Indianapolis?

Brody: What happened?

Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte… just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn’t see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen footer. You know… you know that when you’re in the water, chief? You tell by lookin’ from the dorsal to the tail. Well, we didn’t know… ’cause our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent, huh. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, chief. The sharks come cruisin’. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know it’s… kinda like ‘ol squares in battle like uh, you see on a calendar, like the Battle of Waterloo. And the idea was, the shark goes to the nearest man and then he’d start poundin’ and hollerin’ and screamin’ and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn’t go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he’s got… lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eye. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be livin’. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah… then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin’ and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin’ and the hollerin’ they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y’know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don’t know how many sharks there were… maybe a thousand! I don’t know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin’ chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player, Bosun’s Mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended him into a raft. Well… he’d been bitten in half below the waist. At noon on the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. He was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper… anyway he saw us and come in low. And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb. ” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073195/quotes )

Is this the way we should learn our history? Through a movie?

So if we can’t trust the government then what about the church? I was watching a TV series on History Channel called “Brad Meltzer’s Decoded” and it was on the Vatican. In that episode it was talking about the fact that the church is made of Men of the Cloth … again we run into the human factor.

So it comes down to how do we know who to trust?

Do you remember….

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/fdrpearlharbor.htmDo you remember why the 7th of December is so important? Do they even talk about it anymore? Where was your family at the time? Do you know or even care?

The reason I bring up 7th of December is the fact that if my father would have gone to church that morning he would have been in Pearl Harbor. He wasn’t in the military, he was born and raised on Hawaii. I remember hearing the stories as a small kid and thinking of how horrifying it must have been for a very religious family to miss church on Sunday but then I think of providence … my grandfather had a bad feeling, while he was a very devote Christian he chose to stay home that day. My Dad was out in the yard with his brothers and sisters when he heard what he described a the sound of ‘bees’ coming close. Then they realized that it was planes. With a Navy base so close that wouldn’t have been anything new but he looked up and saw a large red circle on the wing of one.

My Grandfather had come out, saw that and took the family into the mountains. They spent the day in the mountains. The could hear the explosions, feel the ground shake and knew that the world they lived in had changed. When they came home, chaos ruled.

The next day the United States was at war. The President was Franklin Roosevelt was a polio survivor and he had with his son’s help walked into congress and said ‘ Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph — so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/fdrpearlharbor.htm

How different would things have been if we had a congress like we have today?
